インド音楽の夕べ（Indian Music Night）

会社の同僚（インド人女性）の誘いで、彼女の娘さんの通うホプキントン高校（Hopkinton High）主催のインド音楽の夕べに出かけた。

インド音楽といえばシタールを思い浮かべるが、今日の主役はサロード（Sarod）という楽器と女性ボーカル（ビデオ参照）。典型的な１６ビートの他に７拍子や１０拍子の曲もあり、幻想的な２時間を過ごすことができた。

コンサートの後はその同僚の家に招かれてディナー。３台分のガレージがある豪邸（ホプキントンはボストンの西、車で約１時間）。同僚のご主人が今日のコンサートをコーディネートしたようで、演奏者や関係者、その他親類縁者が５０人ほど集まった。

シク教（シーク教）の人たちで、男性は頭にターバンを巻いている。日本人はちょっと目立つ。５０人が集まれる家はアメリカではめずらしくないが、普通は駐車場に困る。しかし、この家は一般道から自宅までのドライブ・ウェイが１００メートルほどあり。車が何十台も駐車できる。レキシントンでこんな家を建てたら少なくとも３億円はする。

この同僚（インド人女性）は非常に誠実な人で（彼女のお父さんも素朴でとてもいい感じの人だった）、私が持っているインド人のステレオタイプに対する数少ない例外である。一般に何かをするための百の理由（charter）や何かをしない（本当はできないことが多い）百の理由の議論が先行するケースが多い。だから悠久の国なのかもしれないが、若干うんざりする。

George Ruckert, a performer, composer, arranger, author, and teacher, is a rare breed of artist who has an extensive background in the disciplines of both western and Indian classical music. He has written a several books and articles on Indian classical music and artists. Dr. Ruckert presently resides in the Boston area, and is a Senior Lecturer at MIT where he teaches western, World and Indian classical music, while continuing his performing career on the sarod.

Shuchita Rao received training in Hindustani Classical Music from several eminent musicians in India. She is the founder/director of RASA Institute of Music in Sharon and a faculty member at LearnQuest Academy in Waltham.

Rajesh Pai started learning the tabla at the age of eight and had his formal training under his Gurus Shrihari Marate and Vittaldas Bhat for over ten years. He has accompanied many artists in classical, light classical and fusion concerts.
